The SMARTech are energy efficient technologies, resulting in net energy savings. The main goal is that the SMART-Plant technologies will reduce the energy demand by more than 50% and will reduce the carbon footprint by more than 30%. Energy recovery will also be realized in SMART-Plant through the anaerobic treatment of sewage. The technology consists of an anaerobic hybrid bio-filter applying a new polymeric matrix for immobilization of selective anaerobic microorganisms that will be scaled-up, tested and validated in the WWTP of Karmiel (Israel) for the secondary treatment of primarily clarified wastewater.
